And now.....drumroll....Civita di Bagnoregio
Civita di Bagnoregio is, quite simply, not possible. In the planning stages of this trip, I had a strong feeling that this would be one of biggest "wow" moments (among many), and it surely is! Perched on a tall butte, the original settlement dates back to the Etruscans, 2000 years ago. Over the last century or so the donkey path up to the town, the town's only access to the outside world, eroded away and has been replaced by the current walkway. It's a hike up to the city, but anything and everything that needs to be delivered to Civita, including people, must go up this narrow path. There are only about two dozen permanent residents remaining. Considerably more cats.
