And then….(drum roll)…..we were offered the opportunity to taste a 100-year-old tawny. Starting in the late 1800’s, the winery would save a very small amount of their vintage tawny, to age in oak for 100 years. So each year, they open up the cask(s), and serve up the 100-year-old tawny. This will be forever near the top of my wine tasting memories - exceedingly viscous, incredibly intense flavors. Don’t quite know how to put it. You could (slowly) pour it over ice cream or waffles, if they were made in Heaven.

I visited there 3 years ago and was fortunate enough to try their 97 year old tawny. It was certainly viscous but not yet in full flavour, requiring a few more months maturing in the barrel.
ReplyDeleteAs you're in the area, I would recommend a visit to the famous mineral drink-producing
monastery at nearby Brek, where you can actually see the monks making their own water.

There 2 years ago for 98 year old tawny.
DeleteVery viscous - flavor at 98%.
Gave the monks a wide berth.
Nigel and I visited 6 months ago.
DeleteTawny aged to 99 1/2 years - flavor at 99.5% - viscosity very, very high, needs to be served with a hot spoon, in chunks.
Re-visited Brek, which was just as beautiful as we remembered it.
Monks not happy with competition from tawny.
