We took a very long guided hike on Ulva Island. It is now a sanctuary for native birds, as all predator mammals have been eradicated from the island. New Zealand has a predator problem on the main islands, and they have embarked on an extremely ambitious project to eradicate all predators by 2050. When all the possums and such are gone, the native bird population will be free to increase their numbers, as for millennia they nested on the ground, since there were no predators. After humans brought in rats, mice, and possums, bird numbers dwindled, as they were easy prey. Anyway, the hike was through primeval forests, as they were for millions of years before humans arrived. https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/pests-and-threats/predator-free-2050/
